Friday Find: Mac&Cheese&Chocolate

Okay, so it wasn't so much of a "Friday" find as it was a "last Sunday transformed to Friday find for the sake of my blog." Nonetheless, the Macaroni and cheese and chocolate dish from Jack's Bistro in Baltimore was phenomenal. I've never had such a simple, yet unique dish before. Five cheeses + perfectly al dente shells + Belgian chocolate shavings. Magnifique.

Aside from spending the evening with a delicious dish, we also shared our feast with friends Rob and Nicole...both are foodies in their own right. (Nicole and I share a love for all things sweet, which helped our friendship blossom immensely while biking together across the country last summer.)

Friday Find: VeryPurplePerson

{via here}

Many people create. They delve into something with such a passion and fervor that they forget the world around them, and stay driven until what they've completed is finished. I find it so enthralling to bake sometimes, that when I'm baking I cannot be bothered with anything else. I am in the zone, and I'm in the process of making my own creation. However, sometimes that creation may not come to fruition as we had expected it. The cookies may come out too chewy (see previous post), the colors may not appear on the canvas as they do in the jar, and the fabric may bunch and pucker unexpectedly.

The Indonesian-born designer living in Japan, Novita of "Very Purple Person" seems to have her creations almost appear before your eyes. Nevertheless, she's not afraid to admit to her mistakes (see her green dress upset...although, it looks wonderful to me). After spending some time delving through her blog, I had to share it with you all! Her clothes are impeccable, adorable, etc etc! Best of all, she has her own Etsy shop where you can peruse her latest creations and purchase them at rather reasonable prices.

She also sells her 6 year old son's crayon drawings at her etsy shop. Now, talk about adorable.

Mother's Day Weekend/Friday Find

This weekend is Mother's Day Weekend! Make sure to thank your mother, grandmother, aunt, or any women who have played a crucial role in your life, for all that they have done for you.

I am hopping on a train this evening after work to go to PA and surprise my mom for mother's day :) Her birthday was last weekend, and when I talked to her on the phone she was so upset because she thought I wasn't coming home to visit until next month. I am so excited to see the look on her face when I walk through the door tonight! She has a habit of becoming particularly emotional when surprised, so I'm getting ready for the waterworks...

I also bought her these beautiful earrings from the non-profit my lovely friend, Jules, works for: Empowering Women International. They have an Etsy shop too (my Friday Find)! You should check it out! All of the jewelry is handmade by refugee women who are making a life for themselves through crafts(wo)manship here in the US. EWI provides them with the capability to market their items, and also raises money to help support their organization's cause.

Do you have anything special you are doing for your mommy/mommy figure?
Happy Friday!

Friday Find 2: EtsyFind!

{via retrowhale}

I love these magnets by the Etsy shop Retro Whale- they make me think of my sister who has a cinema obsession (mine is bad, but her's is borderline illness). Plus, they're made of recycled materials.

Signing off for the weekend...maybe I'll watch a movie or two between bouts of studying.

Friday Find: Recipe

Although I love to cook whenever I get the chance, there are times when I get a bit apprehensive about trying new things in the kitchen. I've been putting off this recipe for a long time, because I've either been too busy studying or cleaning my apartment non-stop (dogs shed). I had bought some leeks at the farmer's market a while back, but they just ended up sitting in the fridge and wilting. This time, I was not going to waste a perfectly good vegetable!

This Potato Leek Soup recipe from thekitchn.com is simple and delicious! And talk about healthy- it's basically potatoes, leeks and water. No joke. You only have to flavor it with salt and pepper afterwards (more salt than pepper). I cut the recipe in half, since I didn't have enough leeks to make the entire amount. However, I still ended up with enough soup to last us (2 people) a couple days. I'm usually not too hungry by dinner time when it's so hot outside- this is the perfect meal to sit down and slurp on those lazy days.

Enjoy! and Happy Friday :)

Potato Leek Soup
Peel and cube about three or four russet potatoes, enough for roughly 5 cups.
Leeks come in a variety of sizes, so slice enough to make a heaping 2 1/2 cups. I slice up the white parts and into the pale green as long as it stays crisp, stopping when I hit the darker green, fibrous part. Wash well in cold water and drain.
Enough water to cover.
Salt & Pepper.
Toss the potatoes and leeks in a soup pot with a pinch of salt. Add enough water to cover and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook until the potatoes can be pierced easily with a knife, about 30 minutes, With a hand blender, or very carefully in batches in a food processor, or even with a potato masher and your own brute strength, blend until the mixture reaches the consistency you prefer. I like mine just a little chunky. Taste for salt and pepper and add accordingly.

Variations:
Sauté the leeks first in a little olive oil or butter. Serve with a dollop of creme fraiche.
Crisp three or four slices of bacon
in a soup pot. Remove and let drain on some paper. In the remaining fat, sauté the leeks until wilted, then add the potatoes and water and proceed as above. You may need less salt due to the bacon. Serve hot with the bacon and some fresh thyme crumpled on top.

A Friday Find

Thanks to Postgrad Haircut's post today, I've started gushing over the perfect "hold-all" bag by the Etsy store Rennes le Chateau. The light, distressed brown leather is perfect for spring. There's a little sidepocket inside to store your knick-knacks (lip gloss, keys) and will most likely fit all those free magazines and newspapers you pick up throughout the day...
